What makes our doctors different?

  • Any general dentist who graduates from dental school and holds a license to practice dentistry can treat patients with braces or Invisalign.
  • But to be called an orthodontist you have to be trained for another 2-3 years in a full time specialty course at an accredited orthodontic residency program.
  • Beyond "orthodontist," is to be certified by the American Board of Orthodontist (ABO). To become a Diplomate of the ABO one must voluntarily submit and pass a rigorous written and clinical examination process which can take many years. Becoming board certified in the specialty of orthodontic is achieved by less than half of the orthodontists in the profession.
  • Both of our doctors are Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Chan currently maintains a non-time limited Certificate with the American Board of Orthodontics.

- Dr. Milton D. Chan -

Dr. Chan earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry in 1983 where he won the USC award for outstanding pediatric dentistry. He was also invited to join Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU), the national dental honor society, awarded to a few of the top dental students who distinguish themselves in scholarship and demonstrate exemplary traits of character and potential for future professional growth and attainments.

But Dr. Chan did not want to stop at being a general dentist. Since the time he had braces as a child, he aspired to be an orthodontic specialist, so he continued his education at the USC Graduate Orthodontic Department, where in 1985, he received his Certificate in Orthodontics. As he graduated, he was asked by one of his prominent orthodontic teachers, Dr. Tuverson, to join him in his Pasadena orthodontic practice.

In 1994, Dr. Chan achieved his professional goal of specialty certification with the American Board of Orthodontics and was invited to teach in the USC Orthodontics graduate program. Appointed as an Assistant Clinical Professor, Dr. Chan enjoys teaching residents the many practical tricks he has learned over the years and has been awarded several times by his students. He also helped start an orthodontic support foundation for the department and serves on its board.

Dr. Chan's professional activities include full membership in the prestigious Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontist along with serving on the board of directors and being a Past President of Angle Southern California. He also enjoys participating in several interdisciplinary dental and orthodontic study clubs and is an active evaluator on orthodontic peer review committees. He strives to promote excellence in orthodontics.

He is happily married and is blessed with both a son and a daughter. He lives in La CaƱada and is actively involved in his church's youth ministries. In his free time, he enjoys camping, hiking and fishing along with traveling the world.
